Makeup & Hay Fever

When the Wattle blooms Spring is just around the corner.

Spring has Sprung and Hay fever Season is upon us!  Three out of Five members of my family
suffer from hay fever including Miserable Me.  Hay fever is caused by an allergic reaction to
pollen released seasonally from trees, grass, weeds, flowers, fungi and mold spores.
Common symptoms include, sneezing, itchy watering eyes, blocked/running nose,
itchy throat and sinus pressure/headaches.

A few tips I would like to pass on to you all to help minimise your symptoms are;

-  speak to your doctor or chemist about treatment, a combination of medication
tailored to your symptoms works best ie, anti-histamine tablets, nasal spray
   and eye drops.
-  start taking hayfever remedies two weeks before the season starts to
   lessen symptoms.
-  a spoonful of locally produced honey every day helps build immunity
   (all year round).
-  keep windows and doors closed, switch to recycle on your air-conditioning in
   the house and car.
-  protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses, keep your hair tied up and wear a hat
outside, hair is a great pollen catcher!
-  whilst outside, coat the inside of your nose with a thin layer of petroleum jelly,
it helps prevent pollen entering the nasal passages.
-  eliminate fermented foods ie:  alcohol, yeast, cheese, yoghurt, mushrooms,
pickles, olives, dried and processed foods.
-  eliminate Histimine releasing food
   (they release histimine when you eat them causing reactions) ie;
Chocolate, Bananas, Strawberries, Pineapple, Eggs, Milk, Fish, Shellfish
   and Alcohol.

Unfortunately for me makeup isn't an option when I am having a really bad day.  Less is best on days like this so I don't end up looking like a Hung-Over Panda.   My red itchy eyes drive me crazy and I just have to rub them making it impossible to wear any kind of mascara.

Clinique all about eyes rich - Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch Primer

Here are a few tips that work for me, during hayfever season and less is definitely best especially round the eyes.

-  regularly apply cold eye packs to calm red puffy eyes, cold soaked chamomile or
green tea bags kept in the fridge work great.
-  apply a good eye cream like Clinique's All About The Eyes to reduce puffiness
   and dark circles
-  have your lashes dyed so you don't need to wear mascara.
-  reduce exposure to irritations from your skincare and makeup routine by going
hypo-allergenic ie;  Almay, Clinique, Covergirl, Maybelline, Neutrogena, Revlon,
Clarins, Physician's Formula all have hypo-allergenic lines.
-  apply a good face primer like Clarins Smooth Perfecting Touch, so you can wear
less makeup (I use this on my eyelids with no irritation before I apply eye shadow).

Almay intense i-color trio for browns - Almay get up & grow mascara - Almay for green eyes

-  wear waterproof mascara to lessen chances of it smudging, flaking and
   falling into your eyes.
-  wear cream eyeshadow, less chance of it falling into your eyes and
   causing irritation
-  stay clear of loose powders, I prefer to stick to liquid foundation and
   cream blush, NO face powder!
-  wear less on your eyes while accentuating your lips with a bright lipstick.
-  ALWAYS remember to completely remove ALL your makeup at night.

Favourite Bellabox items repurchased

When I went to leave feedback for the items I received in June's BB box (you can read my review here).  I noticed that I had now been subscribed to BB for over 13 months and I was looking through all the items I had received in the past year (which is listed in your BB account) and I thought it would be nice to do a blog on all my favourite products that were introduced to me through Bellabox.

These are all products that I have gone on to re-purchase full-size and are now a part of my beauty routine.

www.purefiji.com

1.   PURE FIJI HYDRATING BODY LOTION ~  MAY 2012Coconut ~ this is a luxurious body lotion made with coconut milk which smells divine, if you can't go to a tropical island you can at least bring a little of it home with you.  I have since visited the Pure Fiji website  (they do ship internationally) and purchased several more of their wonderful products.   I love ALL their infusions but my favourites would have to be Coconut, Island Bliss and Coconut Milk & Honey.

2.   NEUTROGENA AGELESS INTENSIVES DEEP WRINKLE EYE CREAM ~ JULY 2012 ~ this is my all time favourite eye cream and I am about to open my second tube.  One tube will last you approx. a year with constant daily use, you can read my mini reviews here and here.

3.   ALMAY GET UP AND GROW MASCARA ~ JULY 2012 ~ definitely one of my favourite mascaras of all time, I have purchased this mascara in black and brown shades about four times now, you can read my mini review here.

matillysthisnthat.blogspot.com.au

4.   emerginC SCIENTIFIC ORGANICS phytocell cream ~ AUGUST 2012 ~ this is quite an expensive facial moisturiser, $105 for 50ml but if you can purchase it on sale or use your BB points like I did, it is worth the extra money.  Shop around you can usually find it reduced, on sale or comes with a GWP.  Contains concentrated Grape Stem Cells designed to revitalise, renew and protect skin.  Seaweed extract promotes cellular metabolism to re-balance and re-mineralise your skin.  Improves skin tone and texture and is extremely hydrating.  I love the smell (slightly orange citrus) and the thickness of this cream, my skin just drinks it up and it leaves my face looking hydrated and plump, my skin looks and feels great after using this cream.

5.   4ME NAIL POLISH REMOVER PADS ~ NOVEMBER 2012 ~ these are the greatest little nail polish removers, very convenient for travelling.   Acetone and alcohol free, conditions your nails and cuticles as it removes your polish.   They are great for wrapping around an orange stick and cleaning up around your cuticles.  I have repurchased these several times, you get 30 pre-soaked pads for $3.49 and they are available here.

matillysthisnthat.blogspot.com.au

6.   AURORA SPA ULTRA RICH BODY CREAM ~ JANUARY 2013 ~ this is a more expensive body moisturiser but so worth it.  It is just as the name suggest ULTRA RICH and if your skin is thirsty and dry it's gonna love it, I know mine does.  It is available at the Aurora Spa website and I think if you suffer from very dry skin like I do especially in winter you need to treat yourself to some.  Contains Shea Butter, Macadamia,  Lavender, Sandalwood, Geranium, Grape, Carrot and Olive oils.  Has a wonderful botanical smell and just makes you feel good.  Available in 200ml and 500ml.

7.   FACE OF AUSTRALIA COLOUR MAX EYESHADOW PALETTE ~ JANUARY 2013 ~ Gold Mine ~  I really like Face of Australia Cosmetics, their products are all very reasonably priced and they are good quality cosmetics that last.  I received Gold Mine which is a palette of four brown/gold/nude highly pigmented shades with a choice of matte, satin and shimmer finishes making this palette great for day and night.  Comes with a very useful HOW TO on the back of the palette.

Gold Mine

I went to Priceline and purchased the remaining two palette variations,  - Mercury Rising - Smoky Eye & Northern Lights - Purple.

Mercury Rising  &  Northern Lights

8.   NATIO PURE MINERAL SKIN PERFECTING BB CREAM ~ JANUARY 2013 ~ of all the western BB creams this would have to be my favourite, I have repurchased for myself and my Mum.  Has that great NATIO botancial aroma, leaves my skin looking great, doesn't break me out and the colour doesn't fade or melt off my face in summer.  I tend to steering away from foundation and sticking to BB cream these days, less is more, and this cream looks more natural.  Available in 3 shades, Fair, Medium and Tan.  You can read more of my mini review and see a swatch of fair here.  If you would like to read more visit Natio here.

9.   NUXE HUILE PRODIGIEUSE ~ Multi-purpose oil ~ FEBRUARY 2013 ~ If I was only allowed to bring one product to a desert island this would be it.  This multi-purpose dry oil can be used to moisturise your face, body and hair.  Makes a very relaxing massage oil or add some salt to the oil and use it to exfoliate your body.  Great for travelling if you can only take a minimum amount of skincare with you, because it replaces the need for several products.  With its wonderful aroma of orange blossom, plum, white lily, amber, vanilla and cedar wood this oil  can be used as an all over body perfume or just a hint of scent on your pulse points.

matillysthisnthat.blogspot.com.au

10.  SALLY HANSEN COMPLETE SALON MANICURE  ~ FEBRUARY 2013 ~ I received the shade  GOLDEN RULE and you can read my full review and see photos here.  I have gone on to purchase several different shades from the range at Priceline, I find the formula is easy to apply,  long lasting and with some of the polishes you can get away with one coat.

matillysthisnthat.blogspot.com.au

11.   YES TO CARROTS C ME SHINE LIP GLOSS ~ MARCH 2013 ~ Rose Bliss ~ Almost a clear frosty thick peppermint gloss, what I like about the YES TO range is they are 95% organic.  I have since purchased another tube in the shade Carrot's Kiss which is more of a pink shade, doesn't add a lot of colour but I prefer a nude glossy lip anyway.  It is the moisturising qualities of this gloss I like the most, no dryness and it stays on your lips for a long time, looks great over lipstick.  I love YES TO lip products and own quite a few you can read my mini review on the C ME BLUSH Lip Tints here.

12.   INDIO FACIAL SCRUB ~ APRIL 2013 ~ this would have to be my all time favourite exfoliant.  Very gentle and leaves my skin soft with no dryness or irritation.   If you have sensitive skin prone to redness and irritation I highly recommend you try this scrub.  You can read my mini review here.

matillysthisnthat.blogspot.com.au

13.  CEDEL DRY CONDITIONER  APRIL 2013 ~ I was expecting this to be like the Dry Shampoo,  a spray formula which moisturised your hair.  Now while I am NOT a big fan of dry shampoo this is just a moisturising mousse cream which is surprisingly good. Can be applied to wet or dry hair, helps untangle and de-frizz and doesn't make your hair greasy or weigh it down.

14.  NATIO NAIL COLOUR ~ JUNE 2013 ~ Valentine ~ Natio Nail Colour is free of formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate, fast drying and chip resistant. Gorgeous shade that needs two coats as it is a little sheer, I went out and purchased a couple more shades today, I really like the formula and the brush.

Valentine  -  one coat  -  two coats
matillysthisnthat.blogspot.com.au

Described as a classic red,  the first coat has a real pink tinge to it and then the second coat brings out the red.  You can find all the shades available on the NATIO website, or you can purchase them from Priceline. I went and purchased ADORE & EXCITE today at Priceline.

ADORE  &  EXCITE

So that is what Bellabox has introduced me too, which I have loved enough to go out and repurchase.  I would love to know what products Bellabox has introduced you too and you have repurchased in the last year, please leave a comment below or better yet I would love to see you blog about it.

If you would love to try Bellabox for yourself please visit their website here and purchase a monthly subscription for $15 per month.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Review

I am the mother of four sons.  Three of whom are still teenagers.  They have had the usual ups and downs with acne but none more so than son number 4.

He started puberty early at 11 (he is now 13), which was really hard on him as he was still in primary school.  He also started getting really bad cystic acne all over his face and back.  Some days he would come home from school in tears from the teasing of the other kids, it was heartbreaking to see him so unhappy.

We tried every kind of acne treatment available and nothing worked.  I didn't want him taking prescription medications to control his acne as I thought he was too young.

Then we tried the Neutrogena Acne Stress Control range.

Neutrogena on their website claim:

Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Stress Control® is designed to help you fight acne where it starts, while actively reducing the irritation and redness associated with breakouts. Acne Stress Control is so advanced, it treats acne even before it emerges.

My son's skin cleared up within weeks.  He went from a face covered in red cystic acne to smooth clear skin with the occasional pimple and that is usually because he slacks off on his routine but it's enough to remind him to get back on it!!

I know that he will grow out of acne one day but it is enough that this treatment controls it now.

What we did learn was that for long term prevention you need to apply twice daily. We also learnt that it wasn't enough just to use one product you needed to wash, tone, moisturise and treat for best results.  This is the routine that worked for us;

STEP 1.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Cream Wash

www.neutrogena.com

Twice daily use a pearl sized amount, massage into wet skin and rinse.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Clear Scrub

www.neutrogena.com

Exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and unblock pores.

STEP 2.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Triple Action Toner

www.neutrogena.com

After cleansing, dampen a cotton ball and swipe over entire face.  Eliminates oil, prevents clogging and reduces red irritation.

STEP 3.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Acne Treatment

www.neutrogena.com

Soothes and hydrates the skin while fighting acne.

STEP 4 - Optional.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Night Cleansing Pads

www.neutrogena.com

Can be used instead of regular cleanser or as my son uses, just before bed as an overnight acne treatment.

You have to use these products regularly twice a day but they do work if you persist.

All my sons have normal/dry skin and even though Neutrogena is strong enough to deal with their acne it doesn't dry out their skin,   they all use this routine and are mostly acne free.

The Importance of Exfoliating Mature Skin

All skin types can benefit from exfoliation but more so as we get older.

As we mature our metabolic cell renewal process slows down, dead skin cells build up leading to dull, lifeless, sagging  skin.  Just to give you an idea, young skin regenerates approx. every 14 days, mature skin approx. every 30-40 days.

Regular exfoliation tricks your skin into renewing cells more often, which leads to smoother, brighter, firmer skin with less wrinkles.

There are two ways you can exfoliate, chemical exfoliators which help dissolve dead skin cells and manual exfoliators which removes the top layer.

I find a mixture of both yields the best results.

Chemical exfoliators which include ingredients such as Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Fruit Enzymes and Retinols etc.....can be found in any number of skincare products which can be incorporated into your daily routine.   They gently boost the skins natural ability to replace old skin cells at a faster rate.

Manual Exfoliators include facial and body scrubs, micro-cloths, sponges, loofahs etc...anything that you can physically use to slough off the old surface layer of skin.   DON'T use buffing grains with sharp broken edges like crushed nut shell, sand or pumice stone as they can tear and damage your skin.

I think your skin tells you when it needs manual exfoliation.  It starts to look dull, feels rough, you may notice flaky skin around your nose.  With my dry skin I find I only need to exfoliate once a fortnight, your skin needs may be different depending on your skin type.

Next are some products which have worked well for me and I now include in my routine.  I think everyone is different and skin care needs change over time but this is working for me so far.

As part of my daily skincare routine, I like to use Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream during the day and ROC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum at night.  Both these products contain Retinol a pure form of Vitamin A which helps stimulate collagen production, forms a protective barrier and reduces irritation.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream contains Retinol, Vitamins B5, C & E.  SPF 15 for UV protection.  This is a great daily moisturiser,  a pea sized amount covers your whole face and neck, super moisturising, absorbs well and is a great base for foundation.

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum can be used morning and night before moisturiser.  Contains Retinol, Magnesium, Zinc and Copper.  I am on my third bottle of this serum, I have noticed a big improvement in my skin's appearance.

Once a fortnight I like to manually exfoliate my face, two products that I am really enjoying at the moment are Dr LeWinn's Facial Polishing Gel and Kosmea Daily Facial Exfoliant.  I like to swap them around depending on my skin's needs.

Dr LeWinn's Facial Polishing Gel contains Jojoba wax micro-spheres, naturally polishes your skin without any harmful abrasive action.  I like to use this when I feel my skin needs more exfoliation, my skin looks brighter and feels smoother after using this gel.

Kosmea's daily facial exfoliant is very gentle, contains crushed Chamomile leaves and ground Rose Hips to gently exfoliate, you can also use this as a soothing facial mask.  Contains Ground Rice flour and Kaolin Clay to help absorb impurities.

I like to use a Loofah once a week on my body.  Growing up, Mum always had one in the bathroom, reaches all those hard to get to places on your back.  Follow with a good all over body lotion.  One I reach for all the time is Urban Rituelle Mango Milk Body Balm, smells of Summer, just divine.

I have always looked after my skin and now in my 40's I appreciate anything that helps me retain healthier younger looking skin.

Please don't forget to comment, I would love to hear what works for you.

Beauty Repurchased Tried and True Skin Care

Since I have been receiving monthly beauty boxes this year I have found that I am purchasing many new items to add to my beauty regime.

I realised though that with all the changes there were still some tried and true products that I always repurchase as nothing comes close to replacing them.

MACRO VITAMIN E CREAM 100g glass jar RRP $11.00 - I have blogged about this amazing cream before but it is worth another mention.  I can't remember how many times I have repurchased this little jar of goodness but it is the last cream I put on my face and hands every night and it is my miracle cream that I can't live without.  This rich emollient cream is very good for dry, sensitive skin, repairs skin damage, sunburn and reverses the signs of ageing.  I credit this cream for keeping my skin in such good condition, I am often told I look at least 10 years younger.

NEUTROGENA AGLESS INTENSIVES DEEP WRINKLE EYE CREAM 14g tube RRP $30 but I have found it cheaper on special for about $22 at Priceline.  This is THE best eye cream I have ever used, it does everything it claims to do.  The most telling thing for me is that every time I stop using it to try another eye cream sample all the puffiness comes back under my eyes.  This is the only eye cream that stops my eyes from puffing.  Fine lines are diminished, shadows and crepe like eyelids are gone and the puffiness of course.  I also use this around my lips, marionette lines and forehead, this is a great cream for all those deep wrinkles.  It won't remove them completely but my face looks a LOT smoother and makeup looks better.

LACURA RENOVAGE INTENSIVE SERUM 30ml RRP $19.99.  This is an Aldi brand, which I am quite impressed with, I have tried the whole range but this is the one that I have repurchased twice now.  It makes a great makeup base, plumps and moisturises your skin ready for foundation.  I feel my makeup looks better and lasts longer when I use this cream.  Great value, only need one pump for face and neck so lasts a long time and definitely worth trying.

YES TO BLUEBERRIES LINE REDUCING LIP TREATMENT 2g RRP US$9.00.  I have yet to find this stocked in Australia and have to repurchase from the US.  This natural treatment/lip balm is well worth the effort if you can get hold of it.  I have seen great improvement with the dryness of my lips,  it's super moisturising and has no greasy after feel.  Makes a great base, primer for lipstick/gloss.  I use this morning and night to keep my lips in plump luscious top condition.

VASELINE LIP BALM SPF30+ 4g RRP $2.95.  This is my go too lip balm whenever I am working or playing outside in the sun and wind.  Thick application that stays put and great protection in our Aussie conditions.  I have one of these in every hand bag, my husband and kids all use this fantastic lip balm.  Stays on for hours and only needs reapplying every four hours.  Out of all the lip balms I own this would have to be the longest lasting and best protection, I have been buying this for years.

KOSMEA RADIANCE 24/7 YOUTH BOOST 20ml RRP $39.95.  This lovely oil from Kosmea uses organic Rosehip oil with the added goodness of Seabuckthorn, Camellia and Pomegranate oils.  I started off just using the Kosmea Rosehip Oil but this is better.  I use it as part of my night routine, you only need 2-3 drops on damp skin, gives your face a healthy moisturising boost of antioxidants.  My face has never looked better, my skin definitely has a healthier glow about it and skin texture is tighter and more youthful looking.

ROC RETINOL CORREXION DEEP WRINKLE NIGHT CREAM 30ml tube RRP $19.99US.  I purchase this from Amazon as I haven't found it in Australia.  I am on to my third tube and haven't found anything that comes close to replacing it yet as a night cream.  Contains Retinol a pure form of vitamin A which stimulates the growth of new skin cells and helps keep your skin looking younger.  Can make your skin appear red with initial use so it is best to use it every second day until you get used to it, don't be alarmed if you persist the redness will go away.  You can use this under another moisturiser, I like to use Macro Vitamin E cream.   This cream has helped control all the flaky and dry spots I used to get, it work like an exfoliater to reveal younger looking skin.

PURE FIJI HYDRATING BODY LOTION 354ml RRP $29.95.  This has been my go too body lotion this year, I have purchased just about all the fragrances available but my favourite would have to be Coconut.  Smells wonderful and is super moisturising, I have really dry skin and go through moisturiser by the bucket.  Pure Fiji helps keep my skin moisturised all day and is the next best thing to a tropical getaway, just close your eyes and inhale.

I have repurchased other items but these are the ones that really stand out for me.  I will be doing a Beauty Repurchased Tried and True Cosmetics next.

Please don't forget to leave a comment, I would love to hear what some of your favourites are.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle System

A daily anti-aging regimen for healthier, younger looking skin. Including an anti-aging moisturiser, anti-aging eye cream, and a gentle facial cleanser, this convenient anti-wrinkle kit combines retinol with vitamin-rich and moisture-rich ingredients to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots, and to help soften and smooth skin.

I recently started using Neutrogena Intensives Eye Cream which I absolutely love. While I was looking for skin products for my son (acne), I came across this system and was very curious to try it based on the positive results I had had from the eye cream.

I love each and every one of these products. It would have to be the first time I have used a system and seen results almost immediately.

Overall using all three products, my skin was noticeably brighter, pores were smaller, acne completely disappeared. Lines were diminished and I saw a firmer, healthier looking me in the mirror. I am super impressed with this system.

This is a 3-step system consisting of face wash, day moisturiser and eye cream. I would have liked to have seen this kit include a night cream because that would have made it a complete regime.

FRESH FOAMING CLEANSER 200ml - This is a soap-free, oil-free, alcohol-free cleanser. Cleanses your face and is gentle enough to use around your eye area to remove all traces of makeup including mascara. Comes in a pump bottle and you only need about half a pump to cleanse your face thoroughly, if I am wearing full makeup I like to cleanse my face twice, just to make sure it's all off.

I like this cleanser, it cleans better than the one I have been using, my skin doesn't feel dry or tight after use and my skin certainly looked brighter even after the initial use.

HEALTHY SKIN ANTI-WRINKLE CREAM SPF 15 40g tube – This is a daily moisturising cream which claims to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in one week.  This product contains Retinol which gives skin an overall healthy appearance, it works by exfoliating  which rids the skin of old cells which block the pores and stop moisturisers from being absorbed more deeply into the skin.  Therefore with newer healthier cells closer to the surface your skin looks brighter, lines and wrinkles are minimised and acne breakouts are lessened.

You only need about a pearl size amount of this cream; it is super moisturising and leaves your face feeling smooth and soft.  This moisturiser makes a great base for makeup, I really love the way my skin looks after using this product.  I have seen a marked improvement in my skin, my lines are minimised and my few acne spots have disappeared.

HEALTHY SKIN EYE CREAM 15g tube – This is a multi-vitamin treatment with Alpha-Hydroxy and Melbiose, claims to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines around the eye area.  Alpha-Hydroxy is derived from fruit and milk sugars; it is used in cosmetics as an exfoliant.  Melbiose is derived from sugar and works as a firming agent.  So basically the Alpha-Hydroxy exfoliates which allows the Melbiose to penetrate the skin more deeply to firm up the eye area.  Be aware that although this cream helps repair sun damaged skin it also makes the renewed skin around your eyes more sensitive to the sun and a good SPF cream should always be applied.

I use this cream during the day and the Neutrogena Intensives eye cream at night, not because I prefer it that way but so I can use up both tubes.  I do feel these eye creams are working for me, I have noticed a great improvement in my eye area, the crepey skin on my eyelids has disappeared and my eye area is definitely firmer.

I just wanted to give a quick review of NEUTROGENA AGELESS INTENSIVES DEEP WRINKLE EYE CREAM 14g tube as I have mentioned it in this review and it is the product which led me to this system.

Within a few days I noticed improvement in my eye area with crepey lids and deep lines minimised, some even disappeared.  I love this eye cream, it is the best I have ever used and it is now a staple in my routine.

I do feel it is stronger than the Healthy Skin Eye Cream and for me more suited to night application even though I have worn it during the day as it does not make my eyelids greasy.  Contains Retinol SA (Sustained Action), which basically means it is stronger and works for longer, I think that is perfect for overnight when your skin is resting.  Also contains Hyaluronic Acid which is used as a dermal filler in cosmetic surgery but is also a highly effective moisturiser.

Overall I am very happy with this system and feel it has made a marked improvement in my skin. I am really noticing it best when I apply my makeup because my skin is firmer and application is smoother and easier.  I feel I look younger and my husband says I look beautiful; it can’t get better than that!
